Where are you heading?

This life has many twists and turns.  It tends to take us in directions that we never imagined or didn't see coming.  Sometimes the destination is a place, sometimes it's a person, sometimes it's a feeling.     I want to visit beautiful places all over the world.  I want to paint again in Paris.  Ride in a red double decker bus in London - on the top level of course!  I want to swim off the Island of Capri.  Eat lunch and drink fine wine on the Spanish Steps in Rome.  Dine in a white washed patio in Greece.  And along the way I want my journey to take me towards freedom, peace and love - and luxuriate in the beauty of it all!

If You Get The Inside Right....

[caption id="attachment_962" align="aligncenter" width="804"]Get The Inside Right Get The Inside Right
Prints Available Here[/caption]   "If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place." - Eckhart Tolle How true this is. In a world that places so much emphasis on the way our physical body looks, it is sometimes hard to remember that the real work is done on the inside. I know that I have spent many hours in my life trying to look a certain way....to fit a certain standard of beauty.  I have exercised like a fiend to fit into a certain size.  I have worn my hair in styles to emulate the current celebrity look.  I have spent a lot of money on clothing that was "in".  In fact it took me until my mid thirties to even recognize what my own version of beauty was - until then I was trying to conform myself to whatever my husband or boyfriend thought was attractive.  What I learned was that until I could define what beautiful meant in my own eyes, then I would never feel beautiful in my own skin. I also learned that defining beautiful did not mean the size of my jeans or the number on the scale.  I found that the real meaning of beauty lay deep inside of me.  For a woman to feel she is beautiful, she must be at peace within her own soul.  She has to become confident in who she is and what she stands for.  I have learned that when a woman recognizes her own amazing worth, that she will begin to accept the body she inhabits.  And when you accept your body as it is, it creates the space for it to change in healthy and permanent ways. So when I saw this quote by Eckhart Tolle, I knew I had to turn it into a piece of art.  And I wanted that art to be all about love...loving yourself...loving your life.  For all of my Body Fab-YOU-lous friends out there....I dedicate this piece to you and your journey towards getting the inside right.

Introducing Angelina...

[caption id="attachment_948" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Angelina[/caption] Before I set off on my trip to Paris this fall I thought it would be a good idea to learn enough of the language to get around town.  I was introduced to the lovely Llyane of J'Ouelette who does French lessons via Skype (super smart way to do it!!!).  After the trip Llyane asked me to be a guest blogger on her site and to feature my art and to tell a story about my trip to Paris.  Click here to read all about it...its a story of falling in love!! This new painting, Angelina, was done while I was in Paris.  I took some canvas paper and brushes with me, and bought some paint at a little art store next to the Louvre.  I wandered the streets, painting here and there.  I started the canvas in a Patisserie...worked more in it sitting on the banks of the Sienne...and finished it when I got home to my art studio.  The name Angelina is from an amazing restaurant that I dined in while there, which I blogged about in this post.  I love this painting...it takes me back to my wonderful trip and the amazing experience that it was.  8X10 Prints are for sale in my Etsy Store!

The Very Thing....

[caption id="attachment_817" align="aligncenter" width="987"] The Very Thing
Available for Purchase Here[/caption] The Very Thing You Are Trying To Avoid Is Exactly What You Must Face. (A Brand New Body Fab-YOU-lous Print!) So true. In this life we spend a lot of time avoiding things - negative emotions, changes in our jobs, relationship issues, internal conflicts, family dynamics....and the list goes on and on. Most of us have gotten really good at avoiding the hard stuff.  It's much easier to bury our heads in the sand and hope that things magically will change without action on our part.  Now don't get me wrong - I believe in magic...but I also believe that the magic lies within the process of facing down the things we most want to avoid. Most often we avoid things because we are afraid.  Afraid of the pain or hurt that may come with facing things.  What I have learned is that the fear of the pain I am avoiding is SO much bigger than the pain itself.  If you face the hard things - it might hurt.  But if you lean into that hurt, really concentrate on feeling it, the pain will soon subside.  And on the other side of that pain is a peacefulness that is beautiful. We also are often afraid of change.  If we face something, we may become aware of the need for change.  You can't un-do awareness.  Change can be hard.  It can mean loss or just as easily mean gain or success.  Either direction can be daunting.  I do believe that dealing with change is much better than dealing with avoidance.  In fact one of my mottos is: "This will make my life easier, more fun, and expand my possibilities". That mantra has gotten me through a lot of changes or situations that would have been much easier to avoid.  So to move forward or create any type of positive change, you must face the things you are trying so hard to avoid. A better future is possible, and it can start today by facing it head on!

(Click Image To Purchase)[/caption] In 6 short weeks I will be packing my bags and heading out on a Parisian adventure.  My excitement is bubbling over into my art, and I am finding myself painting things that are rustic, antiqued and travel oriented!  Le Voyage Paris has been put together by the amazing Tonya Leigh (Check her out - you will be glad you did!).  Tonya's mottos is French Kiss Life!  How fun and flirty! The trip that she has put together is for 12 women to go EXPERIENCE Paris.  You had to apply and be chosen as one of the 12.  Part of my excitement is knowing I am going to meet 11 amazing and dynamic women.  I am sure that over champagne, french chocolates and vibrant conversation we will become great friends! Tonya challenged us all to think about what we wanted our Paris experience to hold.  To me that meant more then a list of places to go and tourist attractions to visit.  It meant doing some thinking in advance about HOW I want my experience to unfold....what beauty, allure and sparkle in Paris is calling me? So here is my list...what I intend to experience and delight in while on my Paris adventure! 1.  Soak in the beauty that abounds at the Louvre. 2.  Paint on the Siene in a lime green beret. 3.  Sit at the foot of the Arc De Triumph and journal about the next bold move I want to make in my life. 4.  Investigate the delights of the Sorbonne. 5.  Sip a cocktail at the Eiffel Tower. 6.  Dance with wild abandon at the Moulin Rouge. Step Boldly Towards Your Future...

[caption id="attachment_711" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Step Boldly Towards Your Future
(Click on picture to purchase)[/caption] Step Boldly Towards Your Future. The time is NOW!  I want this quirky and cute piece to uplift your spirits and remind you that every step forward is a step in the right direction. And while you are stepping you might as well do it in kicky and adorable shoes! We all face challenges that take time and effort to get through - sometimes much more effort than we think we can muster. Recently, I have been dealing with some challenges that kind of rocked my world for a while.  My daughter had the most beautiful baby ever (really - he is!) in January.  Soon after, she developed post-partum depression which led her into post-partum psychosis.  She spent several weeks in the hospital getting stabilized...and meanwhile...all of a sudden I had a baby to take care of.  No doubt that I am madly in love with my little grandson, Baby T.  But loving him as grandma's do, and all of a sudden raising him, are two different things.  Not to mention my constant worry and anguish as I watched my daughter go through the most difficult time in her life. I am so grateful that I had people willing to help us.  Baby T's grandpa helped with some of the nights.  Friends recommended a great day care and a night nanny who is worth her weight in gold.  Caring doctors helped get my daughter back to a place of stabilization.  My own mom visited often and gave me a much needed break.  My team at work was there for whatever I needed, even lending me strollers and baby blankets.  And I had a lot of loving caring people who reached out with a helping hand. Never-the-less, the midnight feedings, colicky evenings, and hospital visits were very wearing.  I forgot where I wanted to go with my life for a while and just concentrated on surviving through each day - taking care of Baby T, taking care of my own two sons, taking care of my company and my clients, taking care of my sick daughter.  There simply wasn't time or energy to take care of me.  But the magic in life is that I got through it.  I'm on the other side of what seemed to be an insurmountable hill.  And I am finally able to start looking forward again and taking those steps towards my own future dreams. My daughter is doing so much better.  Baby T is happy and healthy and just starting to sit up....he will be crawling within days.  I have high hopes that the future for both of them will be bright.  And I  have a smile on my face as I think about where I am now heading myself. I want this piece to remind you that every hard, long, uphill step is so worth taking. Because your dreams matter. And your journey towards the future you want is beckoning you!  Now go put on a rockin' adorable pair of shoes and take that next step.  BE BOLD!!!

Queen Of The Sea...

I've been playing a lot in my art journal recently.  It's a place for me to try new techniques, experiment with different mediums, and simply make a beautiful mess!  I saw a site with some beautiful mer-girls and it inspired me to do this page - The Queen of The Sea.  It got me to wondering what life might be like as a mermaid? I wonder if deep under the sea, the queen of the mermaids asks herself  "Does this tail make me look fat?".  Does she hope her long flowing hair will attract the attention of just the right mer-man?  For many of us land lubbers, it can be a major self confidence struggle to buy a new bathing suit and put it on.  This little lady LIVES in one!  Is she naturally skinny or does she have to go on a fish diet from time to time?  Does she even eat fish?  What about exercise - does she count laps swum between sunken ships?  Does she find contentment in singing her siren song?  Is her life one of play, or does she have a job?  Kids? Silly little ramblings I know...but that's why I call it "playing" in my art journal!!!

Take Time To Smell The Flowers!

Little Girl With Flower - Click Here To Purchase Print

Taking time to stop and smell the flowers.  It's something we all hear we should do, but seldom take the actual time to do it!  I painted this picture after seeing an adorable picture of a little girl in a bowler hat.  I thought it was so cute that I had to paint one myself.  As the painting took shape over many months, flowers began to appear - everywhere!  If you look closely at the top left hand corner, there are some flowers that look like they are fading into the blue.  I drew those in the Boston airport while waiting for a flight last summer.  I used a transfer technique to add them to this canvas - and I love the way they blend in!  The drippy blue background was an experiment with inks....turned sideways!  The collar of her dress was from an old wall paper sample booklet.  The rest was pure imagination! So I encourage you to take a moment to smell the flowers, just like this little cutie!  Reminiscent of more innocent times gone by, this sweet little girl in her beribboned bowler hat smells the daisy as flowers rain down upon her. I hope you (and I!) can remember what it feels like to be enchanted by the scent of a flower!

Your Worth...

Your Worth - Click Here To Purchase

Your Worth Is Never Measured By A Number On The Scale. Isn't that the truth? So many of us measure our very worth by that tricky little number. We give the scale SO much power over us - over our self esteem.  Wouldn't it be nice if we stepped on a scale and what it reported back was that we were AWESOME?  GORGEOUS?  ENOUGH? It's time to stop measuring your worth by what you see on the scale. You are enough. Right now. No matter what the number on the scale is - you are enough! And the first person you need to convince of that is - yourself. Now I'm not saying that being at a healthy weight isn't a good idea.  It is.  You and I both should definitely strive for that for a whole host of reasons.  But I am saying that a healthy weight does not equal what you are worth.  And a healthy weight should never dictate your self esteem, your sense of self worth, and your own believe in your abilities to be awesome.  So take this to heart.  You are Body Fab-YOU-lous! Prints of this piece are available for purchase here.  They look like this!
